The cathedral churches and the other buildings that formed part of the bishopric’s allodium were founded in the 11th century in the lower part of the historical centre, close to the river.
From that time, the crypt and the Romanesque bell tower remain today. In the current neoclassical cathedral, you can admire the Gothic cloister built in the 14th century and the alabaster altarpiece by Pere Oller, from the same style The chapel dedicated to San Bernat Calbó stands out from the Baroque period. The mural decoration of the central nave, the largest work of Josep M. Sert, enriches the artistic value of the whole complex and with the recent inauguration of the Sert Space it is possible to see for the first time, the canvases of the three projects that Sert did for the cathedral: the pastel tones of the first tests, which he did in 1906 and which now line the walls of that enclosure, the magnificence of the four Evangelists which he placed in the cathedral's presbytery in 1926 and which now they decorate the ambulatory, as well as the ocher and voluminous characters that the painter projected after 1939 and that currently occupy the entire nave of the cathedral.
